Tributes to Dr. Murdoch

The following messages sent from some of you -- almost all after receiving the notice of Dr. Murdoch's passing -- can help others see the impact he has had on our lives so far.

"(My husband and I)  appreciated your words of wisdom as we began married life many years ago.  We hope we will be able to pass on some of your valuable insights to (our) precious granddaughters!"  (in a get well card sent by a Wesleyan alumna while Dr. Murdoch was still with us)

"I am writing a brief note to say that I will miss Bernard as we have been corresponding for at least ten years.  He tried hard to make contributions to the world and I admired his efforts.  He was a brilliant and talented individual."  (from a fellow Georgia psychologist)

"Thank you for your notice of Dr. Murdoch's passing.  I never had any of his classes (at Wesleyan College) but remember him as a kind person on campus." (a Wesleyan alumna)

"I found the excerpt from Dr. Murdoch's book very comforting, having lost my husband last summer.  I, for one, appreciate your sending it to us." (a Wesleyan alumna)

"Beloved Dr. Murdoch will be missed by all of us who were blessed to be his students.  Thank you for sharing the biographical sketch of him and for highlighting the passage on "Life and Death" from his book, God and Positive Christianity. (a Wesleyan alumna)

"Thank you for letting us know about Dr. Murdoch and Miss Munck (an English teacher who died near the time of Dr. Murdoch's death).  I hope they knew what an influence they had on so many lives." (a Wesleyan alumna)

"I was so saddened to learn of Dr. Murdoch's death and sorry to be out of town and miss the service celebrating his life.  I can't think of anyone else I have known who worked harder to educate people and make this a better world.  Thank you for all you have done to assist him and for your own insight and commitment to the same tasks.  Shalom." (a Wesleyan alumna)

"Surviving four years as your student at Wesleyan College took intestinal fortitude.  There was a frustrating exchange between us. You did not make education an easy process.  You demanded my best and would not allow me settle for quick answers to profound questions.  When I asked for the easy way out—for you to tell me any answer—you put forth the factors that I already knew and then you were silent.  I looked at your and you looked at me.  I must have spent hours staring at you in your office—and you were silent. Do you know how frustrating that silence was for me?  I went to your office so often when I did not understand a concept, and came away frustrated every time because you would not allow me to take the short cut and hear your answer.  The last semester of my last year at Wesleyan, I left your office in a January rain -- cold, wet, and frustrated—again! With raindrops hitting my face I was suddenly slapped with the realization that you were forcing me to analyze and contemplate. You would not give me your answers because you demanded that I develop my own conclusions.  You taught me to learn.  Thank you. Your student, Sara Jane Overstreet.  (Wesleyan) Class of 1978"

I have just received word that our dear professor, Dr. Bernard C. Murdoch, slipped loose from his earthly bonds yesterday morning. He was my teacher, my mentor, and my dear friend. What a privilege it was to know him these 30 years. Please join me in giving thanks for this amazing person and in prayer for his passageDonna.  P.S. If any of you feel as I do, you may want to consider a gift in his memory in support of two endeavors very close to his heart
